Participatory Approaches for Integrated Development (PAFID) is a Kenyan NGO established in 2006 with a dedicated mission to uplift rural livelihoods and champion the cause of vulnerable communities. From our headquarters in Westlands, Nairobi, we deploy a nationwide team of regional coordinators and agribusiness specialists.

Since 2011, PAFID has implemented 8 high-impact programmes in Climate Smart Agriculture, women's economic empowerment, youth entrepreneurship, and clean energy — touching over 200,000 lives across Kenya and East Africa.

Supporting 111 vulnerable rural households — 70% women-led — with climate-smart solar irrigation pumps to reduce dependence on erratic rainfall, improve food security, and build lasting livelihoods. Feasibility and technical studies completed; implementation underway.

Empowering Vulnerable Women Through Finance & Mechanization

Delivered through the Expert Deployment Mechanism (EDM) of the Climate Risk Institute, this project created the institutional groundwork for vulnerable women to access agricultural insurance and mechanization. Five implementation documents produced, covering women's economic empowerment, agricultural financing, M&E, and a safeguarding framework.

Farm to Market Alliance Programme (FtMA)

A consortium of six agri-focused organisations making markets work better for smallholder farmers across five value chains and agroforestry. Through the Farmer Service Centre model, PAFID trained 100,000+ farmers, converted 30,000+ acres to Conservation Agriculture, established 1,000 agroforestry nurseries, planted 1 million trees, and engaged nearly 100 mechanization providers to offer CSA services — delivering a 30% average yield and income increase for adopters.

Regional Climate Smart Agriculture Programme (RCSAP)

A NORAD-funded regional programme covering Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. PAFID delivered Conservation Farming Minimum Tillage training to smallholder farmers in drought-prone counties of Eastern Kenya (Makueni, Kitui, Meru). 20,000 farmers trained; 10,000+ adopted CA on 10,000 acres. Over 1,000 lead farmers and 30 CSOs mentored to continue advocating for CSA adoption independently.

COMESA's flagship Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation programme across East and Southern Africa, funded by Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. PAFID served as Kenya's in-country partner, training 100,000+ farmers across 11 counties from high to low agricultural potential. 25,000 farmers adopted CA on 30,000+ acres; 40 mechanization providers equipped with CA rippers; 2,000+ lead farmers built into community champions sustaining adoption without programme support.

Empowering Kenya's youth in leadership, governance, and entrepreneurship. PAFID built the capacity of youth institutions and civil society bodies to promote the youth agenda, increasing youth access to employment, enterprise, and livelihood opportunities. Market Assistance Programme (MAP)
Kenya Market Trust (KMT) US$ 350,000 Cotton Value Chain
Designed to improve smallholder farmer incomes in the cotton value chain by leveraging Conservation Agriculture to raise yields and lower production costs. PAFID commercialised CA mechanized land preparation, integrated CA across commercial platforms, and trained spray service providers to deliver efficient, cost-effective services — resulting in substantial livelihood improvements for smallholder cotton farmers.

Programme for Agriculture & Livelihoods in Western Communities (PALWECO)
Governments of Kenya & Finland US$ 45,000 Busia County
Jointly funded by the Governments of Kenya and Finland, PALWECO was established to improve incomes and livelihoods of rural communities in Busia County, Western Kenya. PAFID implemented Conservation Agriculture in two sub-counties, targeting reductions in poverty and improvements in living standards for local farming households.
