Climate change being a hard reality all over the world, Elgeyo Marakwet county has not been spared. EMC has experienced a drastic decline in yields due to unpredictable and inadequate rains. But with the introduction of conservation agriculture by FTMA in EMC with a focus on ripping to facilitate maximum utilization on available soil water and eliminate erosion, farmers now have hopes.
By employing conservation agriculture in growing potatoes, farmers across Meru County have been able to more than quadruple their output while lowering the cost of inputs and reducing weeding frequency.
“I have never harvested beans like I harvested last season,” she commented “and I have never added fertilizer or manure to the soil when planting beans. In the beginning, I thought that this new way of farming was just a hoax. But I was really amazed by how the plants were of good vigour.”
Making over ksh112,000 from 0.5 acres
With over 39,000 Ha under potato cultivation, Nakuru County accounts for 30% of potato production according to the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK). An average farmer produces 6 – 8 tons per acre but with the adoption of Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) it is possible to increase this to 10 – 15 tons per acre.
