Developing Agroforestry Training Content and Guide For Farm to Market Alliance (FtMA) Project

Background:

World Food Programme launched the Food to Market Alliance Programme in June 2017 in Kenya and works with local agricultural ecosystem players across twelve Counties in Kenya to sustainably improve farmer livelihoods. Productivity of small holder farmers, who make up the great majority of the farmers in Kenya, is low compromising their livelihoods and leading to significant domestic deficits in maize, sorghum, and legume value chains. The FtMA intervention has caused an increased demand by suppliers and off-takers for larger, sustainable customer bases with the necessary resources to bulk purchase inputs and aggregate products. To meet this demand there is a requirement for small holder farmers to increase both productivity and margins. Conservation Agriculture through minimum tillage, crop rotation, and residue retention has been proven to be a more sustainable production system that increases productivity, reduces costs and the impact of agriculture on the environment.

PAFID has been contracted by the WFP to implement the CA component of FtMA

The main goal of the CA component in FtMA project is to increase farmers’ resilience to climate change and results in increased yields and income. The programme activities will be grouped into three strategic objectives:

  1. To Increase the capacity of FtMA field teams, partners, area representatives and MoA staff by training them to transfer knowledge on CA, best farming practice and promote agroforestry
  2. To transfer knowledge to farmers on CA, best farming practice and agroforestry through demonstrations, field days and group learning interactions
  3. To increase the capacity of mechanisation service providers (MSP) to offer best land preparation techniques associated with CA
