International Day of Rural Women — Celebrating Kenya's Smallholder Heroes
PAFID's most-engaged post of 2025 — 1,707 reactions celebrating the women at the heart of Kenya's food security and climate resilience.
On the International Day of Rural Women 2025, PAFID Kenya joined the global celebration of women who form the backbone of agriculture and food systems. Rural women are the primary producers of food in Kenya, yet they face persistent barriers: limited land rights, restricted access to credit, inadequate extension services, and outsized climate vulnerability.
PAFID's TAI-061 programme has reached over 2,000 farmers, 70% of whom are women, in Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi Counties. Through farmer field schools, mechanisation support, and VSLA (Village Savings and Loan Association) mobilisation, PAFID works to close the gender gap in Kenyan agriculture.
This post received PAFID's highest-ever LinkedIn engagement: 1,707 reactions and 69 comments.

Women as Key Drivers of Sustainable Farming in Kenya
PAFID spotlights the persistent barriers women face in agricultural decision-making — and how removing them unlocks food security and climate resilience at scale.
Women are the backbone of Kenya's agricultural sector — producing the majority of the country's food while owning less land, accessing fewer inputs, and having less say in household decisions about farm management.
PAFID Kenya's work directly addresses these barriers. Through its TAI-061 programming and gender-mainstreamed approach, PAFID has:
- Reached 2,000+ farmers, 70% women, in Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi Counties
- Supported women's participation in mechanisation and post-harvest technologies
- Facilitated VSLAs that give women financial agency and access to credit
- Enabled women like Janice Kabeti and Purity Gaceri to become agricultural leaders and champions
When women succeed in agriculture, their communities thrive. Removing barriers to women's participation is not just a gender issue — it is Kenya's fastest path to food security and climate resilience.
